Leopards Open Season at Home Saturday at 4 p.m.

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women’s lacrosse team opens the 2013 season Saturday as they host Marist at 4 p.m. inside Fisher Stadium. The Leopards, picked to finish sixth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, look to improve upon last season’s 9-8 record.

Scouting Marist

Marist returns 19 letterwinners and nine starters from last season’s squad. This season, Marist was chosen to finish third in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will be led by junior midfielder Jamie Romano. Romano scored 29 goals, three assists and had 52 draw controls on her way to earning Second Team All-MAAC honors. Senior Ashley Casiano returns to the Marist net. The South Windsor, Conn. native earned Second Team All-MAAC honors last season after posting a 12.36 GAA and 155 saves. The Marist attack will be led by Senior Ashley Miller. The Second Team All-MAAC selection finished last season with 29 goals and three assists.

Coaching Matchup

Lafayette is coached by Alison Fisher, who is in her fifth season in charge. Fisher guided the Leopards to a 9-8 record last season and is 17-50 overall. Jessica O’Brien is in her third season as the head coach of the Red Foxes. She has an overall record of 10-23 and was 4-13 last season.

The All-Time Series

Marist holds a 5-3 advantage in the overall series, however the Leopards won the previous matchup last season in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., 8-6. Marist had won the previous five dating back to 2007. The series started with back-to-back Lafayette wins in ’04 and ’05.

Senior Leaders 

Lafayette will be looking to its eight seniors to lead the way this season, starting with captain Cammie Linville. The Princeton, N.J. native will be a key and the leader of the midfield unit. Defender Caitlin Mitchell will be an anchor in the back for the Leopards. On the attack, seniors Addie Godfrey and Jessica Rothstein will look to continue their production from a season ago, as Godfrey led the Patriot League and was fifth nationally with 59 goals.

Around the Patriot League

Three Patriot League teams have already opened play this season. Navy opened up their season Feb 10 with a victory over Winthrop, 23-4. Holy Cross also started the season with a victory over Bryant, 9-8. American is the third Patriot League team to begin play this season, falling to William & Mary, 17-13.

All-Patriot League Preseason Team

Three Leopards lacrosse players were selected to the All-Patriot League Preseason team. Senior Addie Godfrey will lead the Lafayette attack this season, while a pair of juniors, Ana White, the Patriot League Breakthrough Player of the Year named by Inside Lacrosse, and Rachel Martin were also named to the preseason team.

What’s Next?

After the Leopards take on Marist, they will host Central Connecticut State on February 22 at 7 p.m. Lafayette will then face its first road test of the season with a trip to Lynchburg, Va. to take on Liberty. The Leopards open Patriot League play on March 9 when they host Holy Cross at 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field.
