EASTON, Pa. - Seniors Luke Chiarolanzio, James Coscia, Jared Roberts and Ross Scheuerman have been selected as team captains for the 2014 football season. Fred M. Kirby II '42 Head Football Coach Frank Tavani selected the foursome in consultation with his coaching staff and the team's strength and conditioning coaches. The announcement was made to the team prior to Tuesday's practice.
Chiarolanzio (Florham Park, N.J./Delbarton School) is a two-time All-Patriot League selection at left tackle and a three-year starter on the offensive line. He has started 33 games in his career and helped pave the way for Scheuerman's 1,000-yard rushing season in 2013.
Scheuerman (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) is a three-time All-Patriot League Second Team honoree at tailback and return specialist and was the 2011 Patriot League Rookie of the Year. He has led the team in rushing the past three seasons, accumulating 2,313 yards. Scheuerman is coming off a 2013 campaign in which he carried 210 times for 1,113 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led the Patriot League and ranked eighth in the nation in all-purpose yardage (1,920 yards for 160 yards per game) as a junior.
Roberts (Pennsauken, N.J./Woodbury) and Coscia (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg South) represent the defensive side of the ball. Roberts is a two-time All-Patriot League selection at strong safety. He burst onto the scene in 2012, picking off a team-best four passes while starting 11 games. In 2013, he was fourth on the team in tackles while starting 10 games and playing in 11.
Coscia, too, brings significant game experience, having started 19 games while playing in 20 in his sophomore and junior seasons. He was named the Defensive Line MVP in 2013, recording 49 tackles while turning in career-defining performances against No. 5 Fordham (7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks) and No. 15 Lehigh (49-yard fumble return for touchdown).
"When we start our offseason program in January, through spring ball and into the summer, I'm always trying to identify individuals who can represent, direct and lead our program," Tavani said. "We have four student-athletes whom I expect will do an outstanding job guiding their teammates."
The Leopards open the season on Sept. 6 at Sacred Heart, but will simulate game week this week, practicing on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. at Fisher Stadium and maintaining that schedule leading into the opener in Fairfield, Conn.
