EASTON, Pa. - Freshman Devin Smith's Patriot League-leading 57.54 400m Dash earned her the third Patriot League Rookie of the Week award of her early career, the League announced Monday.
"This award is a continuation of the progress Devin has made so far this year," head coach Julio Piazza said. "What sets her apart is her competitiveness and when the rivalry of Lafayette/Lehigh was added into the mix, it enabled her to perform at a high level. I feel blessed to have her on our team for years to come and this award is just proof of her drive to lay it on the line week in and week out."
Smith won the 200m and 400m events at this weekend's Lafayette/Lehigh Dual Meet. Her winning time in the 200m Dash was 25.63 seconds. Smith's three weekly honors so far this year put her in a tie for the most in a single season in Patriot League history.
Additionally, junior Elise Buffinton earned an honorable mention for her performance this weekend in the Pole Vault. Buffinton topped her own school record with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 12' 5 ½".
"Elise jumps consistently on a high level, so I was not surprised to see her top her own school record this weekend," Piazza added. "This honor is a culmination of a lot of hard work and she's done a great job working with Coach Dunn to be prepared to compete each and every meet."
Next up for some members of the Leopards this weekend will be the New Balance Invitational at the NYC Armory, while others will compete at the Covert Classic at Lehigh University.
