As we've entered into round two of our Patriot League games, each match is becoming more and more important for us. We were successful against Navy last weekend and were able to pull off a 3-0 victory over the Midshipmen!! It was an exciting game that brought out a lot of emotions for us! It's always tough playing on the road but we knew how important it was to beat Navy and came out aggressive.
This weekend we are matched to face our archrival, Lehigh. Playing Lehigh at home is always a thrilling game that attracts a lot of fans. This game will be extra special for it is our "Dig Pink" game. "Dig Pink" is a nationwide Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser. The goal of "Dig Pink" is to help educate and raise funds to fight this terrible disease. The Lafayette volleyball team has been fundraising for this event throughout the month of October in hopes to reach our goal of $3,000.
In preparation for this big match, the team as been working hard on the areas we need to fix. We have continued to improve our serve receive and from this our serving has gotten a lot more aggressive. Though we can sometimes find these drills tedious, maintaining an aggressive serve is crucial to winning a game.
The season is flying by and with the academic semester really kicking in, Tuesdays for our team have become "mental prep days." This means that instead of an on-court practice, the team gets together and partakes in a team bonding/building activity. For example, last week the team was split into four groups and each group was in charge of making a dish for dinner. One group was in charge of the salad, another pasta, one for dessert and one for garlic bread. The dinner turned out great and everyone enjoyed it!
This week, we all got together and were again split into groups to paint pumpkins for decorations at this week's match against Lehigh. Two pumpkins honor our "Dig Pink" night, one pumpkin depicts our enthusiasm to beat Lehigh and the other is an actual volleyball. This was a great chance for our team to express our artistic ability!! These "mental prep days" are important for us because it allows our bodies to rest and gives us time to regroup and uphold our academic standards. They also are fun and enjoyable for everyone!!
Playing Lehigh, home or away, always lights a fire in our game. Everyone is pumped and eager to play hard! Beating Lehigh will be the topping to our "Dig Pink" night! Please come and support us as well as the fight against breast cancer. Go Leopards!
