After returning from a nice and relaxing Fall Break, we're heading into the last of our competition in our first round conference games this weekend against Bucknell and Colgate.
We are happy to report we went 2-0 in our matches last week against Howard and our rival, Lehigh. We hadn't seen nor heard much about Howard and wasn't sure what to expect. The first set was not our best play; in fact it was quite awful and Coach was not pleased with us. Our movement was slow, our reactions were hesitant, and when we had the opportunity to finish the point we blew it. However, we had a turnaround in the second set and picked up our play. We went on to win the next three sets and the game was ours! This game was a great pump-up for our big match-up last Friday against Lehigh!
We had a couple of days to regroup ourselves and get into the mindset of playing Lehigh and how important these games against the Mountain Hawks were. We carefully watched film and found what areas of their play we could exploit on them and what areas to watch for.
Come game day we were ready! There was no doubt in our minds that we had any chance of losing. Any game against Lehigh is a big game. The atmosphere in which we play in is unlike any other teams we face. There is such a strong rivalry between Lafayette and Lehigh that beating Lehigh brings such excitement to us all!
As we warmed up we noticed the crowds of Lehigh fans building up, but that didn't shake us. This game was ours. The first set was a bit chaotic; emotions were high and excitement showed. Our play was strong and we did a great job of mixing up our shots and serving aggressively. Lehigh came back in the second set fighting. We made some mistakes and Lehigh thrived on them but we didn't finish. Going into the third set we were 1 and 1 with Lehigh and we knew that winning the third game would set the tone for the rest of the match. A win! We brought back our fight and smart play and went on to win the third and fourth set, defeating the Lehigh Mountain Hawks! Jumping and cheering, the team was ecstatic! We had beaten Lehigh at Lehigh!! This was a huge game for us and we were so proud of ourselves that we were able to play to that level!
