EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette volleyball team opens its 2013 season Saturday with a pair of matches in the La Salle Invitational. The Leopards, under the direction of 12-year Head Coach Terri Dadio-Campbell, will play Sacramento State at 2 p.m., followed by a match with host La Salle at 7 p.m.

“Our upperclassmen returned in the best shape we’ve ever had,” Dadio-Campbell said, “I think we have had a strong preseason because we were able to move quickly into volleyball and team dynamics this year.”

The Leopards are looking to improve on last campaign’s 9-17 record, as they return five starters and 11 letterwinners.

“We bring back a lot of experience, especially with Karissa and Molly,” Dadio Campbell continued. “We need our captains, Karissa and Molly, to continue to lead and play well.”

Below is a position by position look at the 2013 Lafayette volleyball team.

Middle Blockers

A pair of juniors, Danielle Towslee and Katy Rooney, return to the middle of the court for the Leopards. Towslee led the Leopards with 82 blocks, while Rooney finished second with 70.

The duo also contributed offensively with Towslee finishing second on the team with 179 kills, and Rooney totaling 123 kills.

Freshmen Maggie Evans, Katherine Stevens and Kelly Flynn will also look for time as a middle blocker this season.

Outside Hitters

Senior Karissa Ciliento powers the outside hitters for the Leopards. The co-captain led the Maroon and White with 241 kills and 29 aces last season.

Sophomore Brianne Giangiobbe played in all 26 matches last season drawing ten starts will look to contribute from the outside. Giangiobbe contributed 167 kills last campaign.

Freshman Jet Manzi and sophomore Sarah Moult will look to break into the rotation as outside hitters.

Right Sides

Giangiobbe will see action on the right side, while junior Aidan Guilfoyle will return after missing last season with an injury. Freshmen Katherine Stevens and Maggie Evans are coach Dadio-Campbell’s next option on the right side.

Also competing for time will be freshmen Michaela Tummings and Kelly Flynn.

Setters

Senior Molly Belcher is the leading returner in assists from last season with 81. She will compete with freshman Samantha Volk for playing time as a setter.

Defensive Specialists

Junior Michelle Woodworth will be the starting libero anchoring the defense. Woodworth played in 24 matches last season, leading the team in digs with 330.

Junior Melanie Weiss and sophomore Lauren Pisauro will rotate in as libero. Weiss saw action in 25 matches, drawing eight starts. Pisauro made five starts in 23 matches played.

Freshman Abby Zeller will seek action on the backline.

Schedule

The Leopards will be hosting two tournaments this season. The Lafayette College Tournament will take place on Sept. 6-7, followed by the Crosstown Tournament on Sept. 13-14.

Patriot League play begins on Sept. 18 when the Leopards visit rival Lehigh. The first home league contest will be Sept. 27 against American.
