Leopards Drop Final Match of Season at Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lafayette women’s volleyball team saw its season draw to a close on Sunday afternoon, as a valiant effort by the Leopards was not enough against Colgate.
Lafayette opened a four point early in the first set, taking advantage of two straight attacking errors by the Raiders. With the score sitting at 11-7 in favor of the Leopards, Colgate called a timeout. The Raiders regrouped, eventually retaking the lead before Sonia Musso and Christian Luhnow dialed up kills to tie the score at 17-17 and 18-18, respectively.
Both teams traded blows from there, with Colgate maintain a slim lead. A kill from Tori Smith brought the Maroon and White within two, but the Raiders won the next two points and took the set 25-21.
The second set flipped the script from the first as Colgate jumped out to an early lead. The Leopards were forced into a timeout after the Raiders opened a five point lead with the score sitting at 12-7. Colgate used a 4-0 run to open a 17-9 lead, and the damage was done from there, as Lafayette could not swing the momentum back in its favor, dropping the set, 25-12.
The final set of the afternoon saw the Patirot League foes trade points in the early going with Colgate eventually opening a slim lead. A kill from Katrina Ruggiero cut the lead to 10-8, but two Leopard attacking errors allowed Colgate to take a 13-8 lead and force Lafayette intoa timeout. The Loeaprds never got closer than four the rest of the set, as Colgate took the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Smith paced the Leopards attack with 12 kills, her eighth match of the year with double-digit kills. Musso chipped in with six kills while Julia Howard and Jenna Bailey finished with 18 and 12 assists, respectively. Lexie Caraveo tallied a team high 10 digs.
