Greyhounds Down Leopards in PL Play
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lafayette volleyball team split its season series with Loyola Tuesday evening, falling to the Greyhounds in straight sets, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-17.
Loyola jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, forcing the Leopards into a timeout with the score sitting at 8-2. The Maroon and White pulled within four after back-to-back kills from Sonia Musso and Katrina Ruggiero cut the Greyhounds’ lead to 12-8. Lafayette couldn’t get closer than that, as Loyola held its lead and took the set 25-16.
Lafayette opened the second set with a quick hitting 5-0 run highlighted by two straight kills from Adriana Heimbauer. A 3-0 run behind the serving of Tori Smith brought the Leopards lead to 11-6. Loyola took their first lead of the set with the score at 17-15 following a 7-0 run coming out of the media timeout.
A Greyhound service error and a kill from Smith knotted the score at 17-17. Neither side gave in form there, as the two sides traded blows for the remainder of the set. A kill from Musso brought the Leopards within one with the score at 24-23, but Loyola won the set on the very next point, 25-23.
The third and final set was tightly contested in the early goings, with neither side giving ground to the other. Back to back kills from Christian Luhnow and Heimbauer knotted the score at 7-7, but the Greyhounds answered, using a 4-0 run to open a 13-9 lead. Following the media timeout, Loyola jumped out to a 20-11 lead before a 5-0 Leopards run forced the Greyhounds into a timeout of their own. The Maroon and White couldn’t complete the comeback however, as Loyola held on to take the final set, 25-17.
The Leopards return the court to close out their season this Sunday when they travel to Colgate for a 3 p.m. contest.
