Baltimore, Md. – Lafayette volleyball beat Loyola Maryland, 3-1, on the road in Patriot League action on Friday night. Lafayette earned its second League win of the season and avenged a 3-1 loss to the Greyhounds earlier this season. Three Leopards were in double digit kills led by Jet Manzi’s 13.

Karissa Ciliento and Briann Giangiobbe both finished in double figure with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Katy Rooney finished with eight kills and four blocks, while Kelly Flynn hit 7 kills and a pair of blocks. Samantha Volk had a match-high 41 assists, and Lauren Pisauro finished with 26 digs. Loyola was led by Jac Bullock’s 14 kills and Lauren Andersen’s 40 assists.

The Leopards fell in a tightly contested opening set, 25-23. Lafayette trailed Loyola, 14-11, before going on a 7-1 run highlighted by a pair of Manzi kills and a kill from Flynn and a block from Manzi and Flynn. Kills from Ciliento and Rooney gave the Leopards a 23-21 lead, but the Greyhounds closed the set with a 4-0 run to win, 25-23.

Lafayette ran out to a 5-1 lead in the second game courtesy of a Giangiobbe kill. After Loyola tied the set at seven, back-to-back kills from Volk and Giangiobbe and an ace from Volk gave the Leopards control of the game. Rooney led the way the rest of the set with three block assists and a pair of kills to tie the match at a game apiece.

Ciliento helped the Leopards out to a 6-1 lead in the third set with two kills in the first six points. The Greyhounds came clawing back and tied the game at 13 midway through the set. Loyola took its first lead of the third set, 14-13, but it did not last as the Leopards were able to regain the lead, 17-16, on three straight Giangiobbe kills. The Maroon and White closed out the set, 25-22, on back-to-back kills from Ciliento and Rooney to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Leopards opened the fourth frame with a 4-1 lead, courtesy of a Manzi kill and a Ciliento ace. The Greyhounds stormed back and took an 18-11 lead, but the Leopards finished the set on 14-3 run powered by a pair of Ciliento kills and a kill from Rooney. Lafayette won the fourth set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.

Lafayette returns to action tomorrow afternoon against American starting at 2 p.m.
