HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Middle hitters Meagan Martino and Maura Kelly both set career-highs in kills as Lafayette improved to 4-5 in the Patriot League with a 3-0 victory at Colgate on Friday night.
The win gives Lafayette (12-10, 4-5 PL) four league wins for the second time in school history (1992), and its first all-time victory over Colgate (4-15, 1-8 PL) in Hamilton.
Martino and Kelly combined for eight kills on 12 attacks in the first game as the Leopards used a 13-4 run to pull away and win 30-21.
Faced with a 14-7 deficit in the second game, Lafayette rallied for nine straight points on the serve of freshman Michaela Donohue and never trailed again in a 30-25 win.
Lafayette stared down adversity once again in the third. The Leopards trailed 28-24 but won the next three points. After fighting off one game point, senior Heidi Olichwier found a spot in the back left corner of the floor following a scramble to knot the score at 29-all.
A kill by Donohue put Lafayette ahead 30-29. Each team won a point, and then Donohue combined with Martino for a block on the Leopards' second match point.
Sophomore Veronica Canto-Ponce had six of her 13 kills in the final game. Kelly (12 kills, .450 attack percentage) and Martino (nine kills, .350 attack percentage) checked in with career-highs.
Olichwier finished with 39 assists and three aces. Donohue had eight kills and 11 digs, and freshman Lauren Dalsky contributed 11 digs as well.
Colgate was led by Allie Nichols, who had a near triple-double with 16 kills, 20 assists and nine digs.
Lafayette will attempt to level its league record at 5-5 on Saturday afternoon at Bucknell.
