EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five-set match to NJIT on Tuesday evening in Kirby Sports Center, falling 15-13 in the fifth.

After trading sets over the first four, Lafayette seemed to be in control in the fifth, holding a 13-10 lead, needing just two points to secure the victory. NJIT's Renata Pandolfo served a ball perfectly onto the back line to take back the lead at 14-13 and Janet Snell sealed the victory with a kill for the 15th point.

Two Leopards recorded double-doubles in the loss as senior co-captain Sarah Frohnapfel tallied 23 assists and 12 digs, and junior Karissa Ciliento notched 14 kills and 17 digs.

Defensively, sophomore Michelle Woodworth led the way with 19 digs, while senior co-captain Kaitlynn Zoller added 18. Sophomore Katy Rooney was a force at the net with seven blocks and classmate Danielle Towslee added 14 kills for the Leopard offense.

After splitting at six points apiece early in the first set, the Highlanders settled into a groove, going on an 11-4 run to push their lead to 17-10. Lafayette was able to claw back, tying it at 22-22 on an attack error from NJIT's Danica Vukotic. Two Leopard attack errors and a service error, though, pushed the set to the Highlanders, 25-22.

The second set was even for the most part as a kill from freshman Brianne Giangiobbe tied the score at 14-14 midway through. That kill seemed to fuel the Lafayette attack as the squad manufactured a win in the second, 25-21.

Lafayette never seemed to get close enough in the third after a 9-9 score 18 points in. The Highlanders kept a three or four point cushion throughout the latter half of the set, finishing the Leopards off in the end, 25-19.

Unlike the third, Lafayette controlled the fourth from the beginning. After the Highlanders pulled within one at 10-9, the Leopards ripped off an 11-4 run of their own to push the lead to 21-13. Two Ciliento kills, a Frohnapfel service ace and an attack error from NJIT's Barbara Perru sent the match to a fifth, 25-14.

Lafayette came out with confidence in the fifth, taking an 8-6 lead at the switch. A block from Towslee pushed the lead to 10-6 and a later Giangiobbe block gave the Leopards the 13-10 lead. Unfortunately, kills from Snell and Camilla Tinari, coupled with two attack errors and a Pandolfo service ace tipped the set for NJIT, 15-13.

Lafayette will look to avenge the last two tough defeats in a match that requires no extra motivation, a meeting with Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. on Friday at 7 p.m.
