Oct. 13, 2007
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Lafayette women's volleyball team (10-13, 2-5) dropped its second straight Patriot League match with a 3-0 loss to Navy on Saturday evening. Two Leopards recorded double figures in kills but the team could not overcome a strong Navy squad.
Cara Mulholland finished with 12 kills, a season-high for the sophomore. Mulholland also added five digs while senior Maura Kelly had 11 kills against the Midshipmen. Lafayette, however, dropped 30-17, 30-21 and 30-28 decisions to suffer their fifth league loss of the season.
The first game started out closely as the Leopards remained with three points of the lead at 10-7 before Navy pulled away to take the first game by a 30-17 score. Mulholland had three kills in the game while sophomore Kari Horn led the team with five digs.
Navy jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead to start the second game but Lafayette did not give in and slowly chipped away at the lead as the team came back to take an 11-10 advantage. The game was tied at 13 after an attacking error by Navy's Rachel Dougherty. Navy regained the lead on an attacking error by Mulholland and would not trail again, going on to win 30-21.
The third and decisive game was another competitive battle. Navy held a 19-14 advantage but the Leopards did not give in, as they pulled within one of the lead at 24-23 after an attacking error by Jessie Sims. The Midshipmen pulled away briefly with a 26-23 edge but Lafayette tied the game at 27 on a kill by Mulholland. Unfortunately, the Leopards could not manage to take the lead and Navy held on for the 30-28 win.
The Leopards will return home for three straight matches, beginning with Patriot League opponent Bucknell on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m
