Leopards Drop Conference Match to Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- In a battle of rivals, Lafayette women's volleyball team fell to Lehigh Saturday evening in four sets (22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 13-25).

The opening set was tightly contested, with neither team seizing a large lead. The Leopards opened an 11-9 lead after a 4-0 run, but Lehigh answered later in the set, using a 4-0 run that was halted by Carly Kutschke to bring the score to 21-19. Lehigh held onto the momentum, coming the whole way back to take the set 25-22.

Lafayette kept things close again in the second set, as it used a 3-0 run punctuated by a kill from Christian Luhnow to knot the score at 11-11. The teams traded blows from there, as the Mountain Hawks used a 3-0 run of their own to open a 20-15 lead. Despite a strong push by Lafayette, Lehigh held on to take the set 25-19.

The third set of the night saw the Leopards open an early lead with a 4-0 run to kick things off, but Lehigh rallied to tie it at 10-10. Lafayette went on another 4-0 run behind three straight kills from Tori Smith and a Sonia Musso ace to bring the score to 14-11. The Maroon and White kept their lead for the rest of the set, as Alexis Capers blocked Lehigh's final attack to win the set 25-18.

The Maroon and White opened the fourth set of the evening trading points with the Mountain Hawks, as the score was tied nine times in early goings. Lehigh utilized a 4-0 run to open an 18-11 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-13 and the match 3-1.

Smith and Luhnow ended the match in double figures for kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Julia Howard posted a match high 36 assists while chipping in nine digs. Kutschke hit a team high .294 while Capers recorded two solo blocks.

Lafayette returns to the court next Friday, Oct. 6, travelling to Annapolis to tangle with Navy in a 7 p.m. contest.
