The Lafayette volleyball team started its road Patriot League slate at Bucknell on Friday night, falling to the host Bison by a score of 3-0. Sophomore Molly Belcher headed the Leopards' effort from the setter position with 17 assists, four kills, six digs and three blocks.
With the loss, Lafayette falls to 7-8 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League. Bucknell improves to 4-8 on the season with a 1-2 league tally.
Among hitters, freshman Camissa Beghou led the Leopards with seven kills. Junior Kaitlynn Zoller added five, while Belcher and freshman Danielle Towslee had four apiece. Junior Alexandra Russo and sophomore Karissa Ciliento each had three kills, and senior Alana Taylor and freshman Melanie Weiss rounded out the attack with two finishers.
Defensively, senior libero Christy Mebust shared the match high with 15 digs, and Weiss added seven from the back row. Belcher's three blocks led the effort at the net.
The Leopards hung tough with the Bison in each of the first two sets, as both ran to a 15-15 stalemate. However, each time it was the home team that broke the deadlock to earn wins of 25-18 and 25-22.
With their backs against the wall, the Leopards came out firing in set three en route to claiming a 17-9 lead. Bucknell would respond, however, with 11 of the next 15 points to even the frame at 21-21. Lafayette would not lead again as the Bison eventually put the match away with a 26-24 win.
Bucknell's Kyleigh McAhren led all players with 14 kills. Kat Tauscher dished out 31 assists and Emily Sawanobori matched Mebust with 15 digs.
The Leopards are back in action tomorrow, travelling through the night to Hamilton, N.Y. to meet Colgate at 3 p.m.
