Volleyball Falls to Army in Patriot League Contest
EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women’s volleyball team fell to Army this afternoon in straight sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-19) in their second match of Patriot League play this season inside of Kirby Sports Center.
The opening set saw was tightly contested as the score was knotted six times in the first ten points. The Black Knights went on a 4-0 run to bring the score to 13-9. The Leopards fought back using a 3-0 run highlighted by two straight kills from Alexis Capers and Katrina Ruggiero, to level the score at 20-20. Army called a timeout and was able to seize the set, winning 25-21.
Army came out strong in the second set open a small lead at the very start and eventually utilizing a 5-0 run to open up 19-13 lead and force the Leopards into a timeout. The Leopards got three points back with a kill from Tori Smith bringing the score to 24-16, but it was too late as Army ended the set on the very next point to win 25-16.
The third and final set of the afternoon was another back-and-forth affair, as the Leopards were able to open a slim 11-9 lead off another kill form Ruggiero. The Leopards went on a mini 3-0 run to build their lead to 16-11, but the Black Knights came back to knot it at 19-19. Army would keep the Maroon and White off the board for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19, and taking the match 3-0.
Ruggiero led the Leopards with 9 kills, while Capers, Smith and Christian Luhnow all chipped in six kills. Capers led the team with a .545 attack percentage. Julia Howard recorded a match-high 26 assists, while Lexie Caraveo chipped in a team-best 11 digs.
The Leopard’s next match sees them hit the road to take on Patriot League foe Bucknell next Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
