Easton, Pa. – Lafayette volleyball fell to visiting Marist in the team’s first match of the Crosstown Tournament. The Red Foxes beat the Leopards, 3-1, winning 25-15, 17-25, 25-16 and 25-22. The loss snapped Lafayette’s six-match winning streak. The Leopards drop to 6-2, while the Red Foxes improve to 5-3.

The Leopards were led by sophomore Brianne Giangiobbe and senior Karissa Ciliento with eight kills each. Junior Katy Rooney added seven kills in the loss. Freshman setter Samantha Volk handed out 27 assists, while junior Michelle Woodworth came up with 20 digs.

Marist was led by Mackenzie Stephens’ 14 kills and .407 hitting percentage. Audra Brady had a match-high 43 assists, while libero Brook Zywick led the Red Foxes with 19 digs.

The Maroon and White got off to a quick start with a block from Ciliento and Rooney to begin the match. With Leopards ahead 3-2, Marist went on a 9-3 run to take control of the set, 11-6. A pair of kills from junior Danielle Towslee and Ciliento slowed Marist momentarily, but the Red Foxes kept control throughout and took the first set, 25-15.

After falling behind 2-0 in game two, the Leopards took control of the second set with a 9-2 run. Aces from Ciliento and Towslee and kills from Giangiobbe and freshman Jet Manzi gave the Maroon and White a 9-4 advantage.

Three kills from Ciliento pushed the Lafayette lead to 13-9. The Leopards maintained the lead throughout the rest of the game before a Manzi kill and ace, followed by a kill from Rooney gave the Leopards the set, 25-17.

The third set saw both teams battle back and forth for the majority of the set before a Marist 9-0 run ended the set. With the score tied at 16, Marist’s Gena Russo earned nine straight points for the Red Foxes on her serve, capping off the set with an ace.

Marist jumped all over Lafayette in the final set building an 11-2 lead with Zywick serving for seven straight points. The Leopards slowly chipped away at the Red Foxes lead, forcing a Marist timeout after a block from Rooney, a kill from Towlsee and a service ace from Pisauro cut the lead to 22-17.

With Pisauro still serving, the Leopards won the next two points to pull within three, 22-19. Back-to-back kills from Ciliento and Manzi trimmed the lead to 23-21, forcing another Marist timeout. However, the Red Foxes took two of the next three points to win the game, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.

The Leopards are back in action on tomorrow with a pair of matches against Quinnipiac at 10 a.m. and Morgan State at 3 p.m.
