Smith Named to All-Tournament Team at Towson
TOWSON, Md. -- Lafayette closed out the Towson University Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 loss (25-13, 25-17, 25-17) to the undefeated hosts on Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.
In game one, the score was tied at 2-2 before Towson won seven of eight points. The Leopards answered with a similar run, stringing together seven of eight and five consecutive points to pull within 9-8. Tori Smith had four service points in that span and later was named as Lafayette's representative on the All-Tournament Team. Leading 14-12, Towson rattled off 10 in a row behind the serve of Marrisa Wonders to win the game, 25-13.
As the match moved to the second game, the score was knotted at 7-7. The hosts claimed four straight points and seven of eight. Sonia Musso's kill made it 15-10, Towson. Towson saw four different players register kills as the Tigers ran off five in a row to lead 20-10 in a 25-17 final.
As the third game opened, Towson posted six straight points, split between three kills and three Leopard attacking errors. The final error in the run forced Lafayette to take a timeout. Lafayette responded by winning five of the next six points. Alexis Capers, Carly Kutschke and Adriana Heimbauer helped trim the deficit to 7-5.
Towson led 14-9 before knocking out four straight points to take a commanding 18-9 advantage. The Leopards got as close as six points, 21-15, after a Smith kill and a pair of Towson hitting errors in the eventual 25-17 final.
Kutschke led the team with six kills in the match while Julia Howard had 18 of the team's 22 assists. Lexie Caraveo registered 19 digs for the Maroon and White while Smith contributed nine. For the Tigers, Jocelyn Kuilan and Annie Ertz combined for 23 kills on 47 attack attempts.
The Leopards (1-9) return home to host the Lafayette Invitational, playing NJIT on Friday at 7 p.m. and Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Kirby Sports Center.
