PISCATAWAY, N.J.- The Lafayette volleyball team fell to Rutgers Tuesday in three sets for its first loss of the season, ending its school-record start of five wins in a row.

13 kills from the Scarlet Knights’ Kylie Orr and nine from Alex Lassa proved too much for the Leopards. After two tight sets finishing with Lafayette on the losing end 25-23 and 25-21, Rutgers ran away with the third, taking it 25-12.

Junior Karissa Ciliento led the Leopard offense with 11 kills and reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Sarah Frohnapfel set up 26 assists on the night. Freshman Brianne Giangiobbe recorded two blocks at the net, while sophomore Michelle Woodworth tallied 10 digs for the Lafayette defense.

In the first set, Lafayette rallied from a 20-16 deficit to pull within one at 23-22 thanks to two Ciliento kills. Unfortunately, an Orr kill coupled with a Ciliento service error ended the set at 25-23.

The Leopards dug themselves a hole to start the second set, trailing 11-6 midway through the frame. Two kills from sophomore Katy Rooney brought Lafayette within one at 17-16, but again let the set slip away dropping the game 25-21.

In the third, the Leopards stayed close fighting to a 4-4 tie to begin the set. However, that was as close as they would get as runs of five and six straight by the Scarlet Knights finished off Lafayette 25-12 in the third.

Lafayette will head to Philadelphia tomorrow to take on La Salle at 7 p.m.
