EASTON, Pa. - Saturday morning picked up where Friday evening left off for the Lafayette volleyball team. The Leopards put together their second consecutive sweep at the Lafayette College Tournament, upending visiting Rider by set scores of 25-22, 28-26 and 25-20.
Lafayette now sits at 3-0 for the first time since 1988. With a win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the tournament finale this evening, the Leopards would start a campaign with four victories for the first time since the 1982 squad started out at 6-0. Rider falls to 1-4 with the loss.
A duo of freshmen fueled the Leopards. Camissa Beghou shared the game high with 11 kills - hitting .375 (11-2-24) on the outside - while Danielle Towslee dominated the middle with five kills (.364, 5-1-11) and seven blocks. Junior Kaitlynn Zoller came off the bench to hammer home nine kills. Junior setter Sarah Frohnapfel continued to run a balanced offense, distributing 26 assists to seven different players. She also had five kills, eight digs and two blocks.
Junior libero Christy Mebust patrolled the back row and notched a team-high 11 dig in addition two landing three of the Leopards' seven service aces.
The Broncs were the first team to 20 points in each of the first two sets, but the Leopards battled back on both occasions to win the frames. In the second stanza, Lafayette fought off five Rider set points before finally stringing together three straight tallies to earn the set. Though the Leopards never trailed in the third frame, Lafayette did fight off a late rally that saw the score tied at 16-16 before reeling off four consecutive points en route to clinching the match with a 25-20 win.
After concluding today's tournament with a 5 p.m. meeting against Fairleigh Dickinson, the Leopards are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 as Loyola (Md.) visits Kirby Sports Center at 7 p.m.
