BALTIMORE, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) -
If Wednesday night's performance is any indication, the Lafayette volleyball team will play with a lot of confidence this season. The squad opened the 2004 season with a three-game win at Morgan State, by the score of 30-24, 33-31, 30-28. The Leopards, who fell to the Bears in five games a year ago, start the season with a win for the first time since 1994.
Lafayette was led by sophomore right side hitter Veronica Canto-Ponce, who had 21 kills on 45 total attacks for a .333 hitting percentage. Senior setter Heidi Olichwier directed the attack all evening and finished with 33 assists.
Freshman Michaela Donohue led the Leopards with 16 digs and four aces, and contributed nine kills in her first collegiate match. Esther Johnson had 11 kills, 12 digs and three aces to pace Morgan State.
The match turned in the second game with Morgan State leading 24-18, as Lafayette battled back to capture the game 33-31 and went on to win the third game, 30-28.
The team will travel to La Salle on Friday and Saturday to play four matches over the weekend. The action gets started on Friday morning as Lafayette plays Marist.
