Sykes Named Female Tennis Player of the Month
Nov. 1, 2006
EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Sophomore Sarah Sykes got the job done in Lafayette's only tennis match of October, winning both her singles and doubles battles. The Patriot League rewarded Sykes for her efforts, as the Philadelphia-area native picked up Lafayette's first monthly honor of the fall season.
Sykes played a major role in the Leopards' 5-2 fall record, as she posted 3-1 records in both singles and doubles. The Economics and Business major played anywhere from the second to fourth flight, displaying versatility that head coach Eric Ratchford said was key to the Leopards' success.
"Sarah is doing great," Ratchford said. "She has worked hard to improve and has adjusted well to playing higher up in the lineup for us this season."
Playing in the No. 3 slot against St. Francis (Pa.) on Oct. 14, Sykes disposed of Samantha Fulchiero of the Red Flash by a 6-3, 6-1 score. She also teamed with classmate Ansley Scudder to defeat Roxy Ionescu and Mallory Palmer, 8-3, in second doubles action.
The Lafayette women return to action on March 11 against UMES before heading down south for a pair of matches in North Carolina and Florida.
