PHILADELPHIA – Junior Jordyn Spellberg took the top spot in the Flight 4 Singles Consolation to lead the Lafayette women’s tennis team at the St. Joseph’s Invitational this past weekend at the SJU Tennis Complex.
Spellberg was the most successful player over the weekend as she advanced to the Flight 4 final in singles competition. Spellberg defeated Drexel’s Mel Reyes in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, to advance in the bracket. Then, in the final, Spellberg took care of Villanova’s Gianna Mitchell in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to win the consolation draw. Blank reached the second round by winning 6-1, 6-2 over Loyola’s Meredith Dwyer. Spellberg was also part of a win with senior Lucy Bass in Flight 2 of the doubles consolation, as the duo defeated Loyola’s Billups and Dwyer by a score of 8-0.
Freshman Tori Almeida reached the second round of the singles Flight 2 draw by beating St. Francis’ Lucy Jasso in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 10-7. Almeida was also part of a doubles triumph with classmate Lauren Tracy, as the duo reached the second round of the doubles Flight 2 by defeating Fairfield’s Laliberte and Zieger, 8-2.
Sophomore Catherine Senopoulus was the only other Leopard to come away with a win on the day as she reached the second round of the singles Flight 3 consolation draw. She edged Loyola’s Tiffany Ash in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
Lafayette returns to the court on Oct. 6 when it hosts Wagner at 11 a.m.
