Women's Tennis Defeats Fairfield, Drops First Match of Season at Quinnipiac

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's tennis team improved to 12-0 with a 5-1 win over Fairfield before losing its first match of the season at Quinnipiac on the first weekend of March in Connecticut.

The Leopards opened the weekend on Saturday against Fairfield in a match played at Yale's indoor facility. Lafayette claimed the first five singles points for a 5-1 victory, as the doubles matches were not contested.

Lisa Fung-Kee-Fung, Julia Strang and Lauren Clarke won each of the top three spots in straight sets for Lafayette. Ansley Scudder and Meghan Fitzgerald were extended to three sets before prevailing in their affairs. Scudder fought back from a set down before winning 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 4, while Fitzgerald by a score of 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 5. Danielle Bailey fell in an eight-game pro set, 8-6, for the Stags' lone point.

Quinnipiac won every singles match in straight sets and dropped just five games combined in three doubles matches to deal Lafayette its first loss of the 2005-06 season. The Leopards were undefeated in all 33 doubles pairings on their way to 12 straight dual meet wins to open the campaign.

Gabby Pasternak and Tina Hoang won 8-3 over Fung-Kee-Fung and Clarke at first doubles and also filled the Bobcats' top two singles spots. Julia Strang lost 6-2, 6-1 at second singles for the first setback of her career, after opening with six wins each at No. 2 and No. 3 without a defeat.

Next up, Lafayette will play at Delaware on Sunday, March 12 at 11 a.m.
