Lafayette Swimming Teams Honored for Commitment to Service

Nov. 21, 2002

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's and women's swimming teams received the Distinguished Community Service Award from the Arc of Warren County at an annual awards dinner at Hawk Point Golf Club in Washington, N.J.

The Leopards welcome mentally challenged individuals to Ruef Natatorium every other Monday, where they work one-on-one with the Lafayette student-athletes in swimming instruction. Roughly 15 people participate in the program, ranging in age from eight to 42 years old. This is the ninth season that Lafayette has worked with the Arc.

"I firmly believe no one knows the sport until they teach it," said Lafayette swimming head coach Jim Dailey. "This was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to be able to turn around and teach swimming to someone else."

The Lafayette swimming teams return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. when Lehigh visits Ruef Natatorium.

Lafayette Athletics, as a partner in the mission of the College, provides an incredibly effective learning experience for student-athletes through competitive NCAA Division I athletics. Lafayette sponsors 23 varsity sports with more than 600 student-athletes.
