Read Coach Jim Dailey's thoughts on the Lafayette Invitational

Welcome to the coach's corner!
What a weekend we had hosting the Lafayette Invitational. Both teams swam very well and are completely exhausted. Most of the swimmers competed in nine events over two sessions. The morning session consisted of the longer events and the afternoon session consisted of the sprint events. Their only rest was a two-hour break between sessions where there were three heats of the mile swum. Basically, we took all the events of our three-day Patriot League Championship (minus the 800 free relay) and put it into a single day. The other schools participating were Seton Hall University, Kutztown University and St. Peter's College. Seton Hall and Kutztown brought fairly large teams and St. Peter's only sent three men. Both of our teams did well. The men finished second behind Seton Hall University and the women won their meet by only eight points over Seton Hall.
This meet is a good chance for some of our first-year student-athletes to race at collegiate length races. Jen Totten, Daniele Menard and Greg Van Volkenburg swam fast enough to place some of their times into the Lafayette Swimming All-Time Top 10. Jen did so in the 100 and 200 breast events. Daniele in the 100 breast and Greg in the 100 and 200 back events. Transfer junior Chris Grabowski made the top 10 in the 200 fly, 100 back and just missed breaking the school record in the 400 IM.
Some of our swimmers chose events they don't normally swim. In those events, they swam best times. Robert Gates swam a personal best in the 500 free and 1650 free, Greg Van Volkenburg in the 200 IM, Alison Scudder, Nancy Haystrand and Kate Ehling in the 100 breast and Jeromie Ballreich in the 50 free. We even had one of our women swim all the events, Brenda Thayer. I was surprised to have our relays not be spread out in terms of splits. Most of the women's relays - at least the A,B and C relays - were less than two seconds apart total. The men's relays - especially the A and B relays - were less than two seconds apart, which will come in handy in our dual meets that start next week against St. Peter's College.
The results of the meet can be found on our web page under schedule and results. The top five and All-Time Top 10 can be found on the same web page.
