Lafayette Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Teams Earn Academic All-America Honors

March 23, 2004

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's men's and women's swimming and diving teams have earned Academic All-America honors from the College Swim Coaches Athletic Association (CSCAA).

The women posted a 3.22 grade-point average during the fall semester, ranking 37th among all NCAA Division I programs. The men recorded a 3.10 GPA, 16th in Division I.

To qualify for Academic All-America honors, the cumulative GPA of the team's entire roster must be at least 2.80.

"One tradition both teams have exhibited over my 12-year tenure at Lafayette College is an undying commitment to their academics," said head coach Jim Dailey. "If they did not excel in the classroom, they would not be given the opportunity to excel in the pool.

"Our teams take great pride in their academic performance," he added. "It is a competition for both the men's and women's teams to determine which has the highest team GPA each semester."

The women's program has earned Academic All-America honors in 20 of 21 semesters under Dailey, including 19 semesters in which the team's collective GPA was 3.0 or higher. Twelve members of the women's team were named to the Dean's List during the recently completed fall semester.

Lafayette's men have garnered Academic All-America honors from the CSCAA in 17 of 21 semesters under Dailey. Five members of the men's team, which is comprised predominantly of math and science majors, made the Dean's List during the fall semester.

Lafayette's men's and women's teams both finished seventh at the 2004 Patriot League Championships.
