Chris Grabowski and Liz Helwig Named Patriot League Swimmers of the Week

Jan. 20, 2004

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette senior Chris Grabowski (Port Carbon, Pa./Pottsville Area) and freshman Liz Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J./Madison) have been named the Patriot League Swimmers of the Week for their performances last week.

Grabowski claimed three individual first-place finishes and swam on a winning relay at Colgate on Jan 15. He claimed the 100 backstroke (53.54), 200 backstroke (1:54.34) and 400 individual medley (4:14.93) and was part of the winning 400 medley relay (3:38.40). His individual times were the fastest posted by a Leopard this season, while his time in the 200 backstroke was the fifth-fastest all-time at Lafayette. His times in the 100 backstroke and 400 IM rank ninth and tenth, respectively, all-time at Lafayette.

Helwig also claimed a trio of first-places at Colgate. She won the 50 freestyle (25.06), 100 freestyle (54.45) and 100 butterfly (59.06). She is now only the second Lafayette woman to swim the 100 butterfly in under one minute. Her time of 59.65 is the second-fastest in Lafayette history and sixth-fastest in the Patriot League this year.

Lafayette's swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, hosting Georgetown in Ruef Natatorium at 2 p.m.
