Lafayette Swimming and Diving Takes on Lehigh

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette men's and women's swimming and diving teams took on archrival Lehigh in dual meet action on Friday night at Ruef Natatorium. Lehigh swept both competitions, winning 176-66 on the women's side and 164-77 in men's action, but the Leopards enjoyed several individual standout performances.
Jakub Pritz had one of those outstanding nights for the Leopards in the sprint freestyle events. Pritz won the 50 free in 21:69 and also took second in the 100 free in a time of 48:62.
The Leopard men (2-2) were strong in the 200 backstroke, taking first and second place. Greg Van Volkenburg earned a first-place finish, swimming a time of 1:58.25. He beat out teammate Kris Klein who finished second in 1:59.49. Van Volkenburg's day was not finished as he raced to a second place finish in the 200 free in 1:45.71. Klein also managed a third-place finish in the 200 IM in 2:01.48.
Justin Gaudreau continue his hold on the competition in the diving events. Gaudreau claimed the three-meter event with a score of 227.77, winning the event by 45 points over the nearest Lehigh competitor. He also took second in the one-meter competition with a score of 200.85.
On the Lafayette women's side, it was Brenda Thayer who came through for the Leopards. Thayer claimed a first-place finish in the 200 IM in 2:12.49. She also managed to end third in the 200 breaststroke and 200 backstroke. The 200 breast was won by Lafayette's Jen Totten who swimming a time of 2:28.79.
For the Lafayette women's divers, Daniele Menard finished second in the one-meter event, recording a score of 196.65. Crissy MacDonald laid claim to third place (188.85). Elizabeth Edwards was Lafayette's (2-3) top finisher in the three-meter with a 117.75.
Both teams return to dual meet action on Jan. 11, 2003 at Bucknell.
