March 28, 2008
EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette softball team opens Patriot League play this weekend, hosting Bucknell in a four-game series. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. while Sunday's play is set to start at noon.
The Leopards (5-10) opened the home season on Tuesday, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with Drexel. Senior Kristen Ruckno's grand slam in the sixth inning helped to lift Lafayette to an 8-5 victory in the first game. It was Ruckno's second home run of the season and the 22nd of her career. She is already first on Lafayette's all-time list and is fourth in the Patriot League. Ruckno needs eight more to take the third spot in the conference record books.
The Dragons took the second game 7-3 after Ashley Botelho hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The game was called at the end of the sixth inning due to darkness.
Freshman infielder Kerry Griffin leads the Leopards with a .375 batting average. She was named the Patriot League Softball Rookie of the Week after boasting a .450 batting average through eight games in Florida during the team's spring break trip. Griffin was 3-for-4 against both Columbia and against Manhattan, both wins for the Leopards.
The Bison (6-18) arrive in Easton in the middle of an eight-game road trip. Bucknell's rookie Alison Ford was named the Patriot League Player of the Week after driving in six runs and scoring two runs in a doubleheader against Coppin State. Ford is currently batting .227 with two doubles and one homer this season. She was also named the ECAC Division I Softball Player of the Week.
Bucknell most recently split a doubleheader with UMBC on Wednesday. Senior Erin Curatola and freshman Lauren Fry both hit homers in the first game to win it 5-3 before dropping the second 5-1 to the Retrievers. Five Bison have homered this season with junior Cassie Lloyd leading the way with two through 24 games. Lloyd is batting .229 this season with six RBI.
The Bison were selected to finish fifth in the conference after posting a 15-33-1 overall record and 7-12 mark in Patriot League play. Lafayette was selected to finish third after finishing last season with a 21-25 mark overall and a 10-10 record in conference.
Lafayette continues the season at Metzgar with a rescheduled doubleheader against Rider on April 1 at 2:30 p.m.
