Softball Drops First Game of Patriot League Tournament
April 28, 2000
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Lafayette (6-19) scored one run in each of the first two innings, and senior pitcher Erin Hall (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) was cruising until the fifth inning, when Lafayette's 2-1 lead turned into a 5-2 deficit on four Bucknell (11-24) runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Bison never looked back, slamming three home runs en route to a 11-7 win in the first round of the Patriot League Championship Tournament.
Trailing 10-2 and facing a possible mercy rule ending to the game, sophomore outfielder Stacy Brewer (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) came up with two runners on and drilled a home run over the left centerfield wall to send the game to the seventh inning. It was her first career home run.
The Leopards were in the eight run hole due to three Bison home runs, setting a Bucknell single season team record with 14 home runs this season. Charity Ford hit a two-run shot to take the lead in the fifth inning, followed by shots by Heather Janowski and Stephanie Morgan in the sixth inning.
After Bucknell added an insurance run in the top half of the last inning, Lafayette made things exciting with two runs in the bottom of the inning on freshman Erin Allison's (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) single up the middle. Allison started at second in place of the injured captain Liz Siliato (San Francisco, Calif./Andover Academy)
Hall went five complete innings, allowing ten runs. Only two of those runs, however, were earned, as she picked up the loss, dropping her to 4-10 on the season.
Lafayette is not out of the running, however. The Leopards play tomorrow against the loser
of the 9 a.m. game between No. 1 seed Lehigh and the No. 4 seed Holy Cross.
