Lafayette Softball Swept by Bucknell in Low-Scoring Doubleheader

LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette hitters could not figure out the Bucknell pitchers as the Leopards lost 3-0 and 3-1 in Patriot League softball action on Thursday afternoon. Lauren Box hurled a five-hit shutout in the opener for the Bison, striking out five batters en route to the win. Bucknell gave her plenty of run support in the bottom of the first, as Kris Devore smacked a two-run double to right to put the Bison ahead 2-0. The Bison added a third run in the fourth when Box singled home Lauren Wible. Meghan Davis garnered two of the Leopards' five hits in the game, while Becky Foley, Jackie Fitzgerald and Gianna Lopreato also registered a hit. Megan Longo took the pitching loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits, while walking four and striking out four batters in six innings to drop to 0-5. Lafayette scored first in the nightcap with a run in the top of the first. Lopreato was hit by a pitch and Laura Schrager reached on a fielder's choice. Mara Shainheit then singled through the left side to advance Schrager to second. Tara Martinho came through, delivering an RBI single to left, scoring Schrager and putting Lafayette ahead 1-0. Bucknell took the lead in the home half of the fourth, as Angela Stackhouse singled and Wible belted a two-run homer to right center to put the Bison ahead 2-1. An RBI single by Meredith Gill added an insurance run and gave the Bison a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Julie Williams then retired the side in the top of the seventh to finish the complete game six-hitter. Williams allowed one earned run and struck out eight, while walking one.
Lauren Belowich took the loss, giving up just give hits and three earned runs in six innings. She fanned seven and walked four, falling to 4-12 this season. Lopreato led the Leopards in game two, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate, while Shainheit smacked two hits in four at-bats. Lafayette (5-27, 1-15) wraps up conference play with doubleheaders at Colgate on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. both days. |
