WEST POINT, N.Y. - A two-run first inning for Army proved to be the difference as the Black Knights handed Lafayette a 3-1 loss in the series finale on Sunday at the Army Softball Complex.

The hosts' runs came home with two outs in the inning and runners on second and third. An infield error allowed Alee Rashenskas and Amanda Nguyen to score for the 2-0 lead.

Army (19-22, 7-5) stretched its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Kasey McCravey scored Rashenskas with an infield single.

The Leopards answered with their only run of the game in the top of the next inning. Junior Kelly Lallis led off things with a triple to right field. Freshman Kristyn Marinelli brought her the rest of the way with an RBI-single to center field.

Lafayette looked for more in the fifth, but stranded a pair of runners to keep the score at 3-1. In the sixth and seventh, Allison Brown and pinch hitter Melissa Robinson each singled to get on, but advanced no closer to home.

Lindsey Cherry (2-9) was handed the loss in the circle, despite giving up just one earned run. She struck out two and walked one while scattering seven hits. Kristen West (2-4) picked up the win, allowing a run on six hits with two strikeouts.

Lafayette (6-29, 4-11) gets back to game action on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Rider. First pitch is tabbed for 3 p.m.
