EASTON, Pa. -- Lafayette claimed a Patriot League series victory with a 6-5 win over Colgate on Sunday at a windy Metzgar Fields.

The Leopards scored five runs on three hits and a couple of errors in the bottom of the third when Lafayette sent 10 batters to the plate. Kaitlyn Rarick led off with a double and scored on Paige Grover’s double. Lafayette loaded the bases with no outs and Maddie Wensel came through with a two-run double.

Wensel’s two-bagger prompted a pitching change. The Leopards loaded the bases again and Malori Pojar drew a walk and then Rebecca Dvorak drove in a run with a ground ball for a 5-1 lead.

Lafayette starter Alexis Randall faced substantial resistance in the top of the fifth when Colgate scored three runs. The Leopard defense committed two errors, leading to each of those runs being unearned. Holly Geranen and Meghan Romero each connected for two-out singles to drive in three runs as Colgate closed the gap to 5-4.

The Leopards got a much-need run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Grover (2-for-3) smashed her seventh home run of the season, a solo shot, to push the Leopard lead to 6-4.

Colgate (8-25, 3-6) made it interesting in the seventh. Randall retired the first two batters in quick order. Romero followed a Virginia Irby double with an RBI-single to cut Lafayette’s margin to 6-5. Randall then took care of No. 3 hitter, Geranen, enticing her to ground out to the circle to end the game.

Randall (4-13) struck out five, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits. Bella Crow (3-12) took the loss, allowing five runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Lafayette (6-31, 3-9) remains at home to host a doubleheader vs. Manhattan on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
