March 29, 2014
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to claim a 4-0 win over Lafayette softball on Saturday at Kaufman Field. Game two was postponed until Sunday due to rain.
The game was scoreless through four and a half innings, but Lehigh got to Lafayette starter Melissa Robinson for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Morgan Decker belted a one-out, two-run home run to right center.
Lafayette registered its first of two hits in the game in the top of the sixth. Jenna Kulback singled through the left side. The Leopards took advantage of a passed ball and used a Kelly Lallis groundout to advance Kulback to third with just one out. The potential run-scoring opportunity ended when Kristen Berger lined into a 6-5 doubleplay to end the inning.
Lehigh (12-10, 4-0) stretched its lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Vicky Lattanzio doubled home Emma Capetz after a lead-off single and Kristin Taft, who pinch ran for Lattanzio, later scored on a wild pitch.
The Leopards (2-14, 1-3) put two runners on in the seventh, including Allison Brown with a lead-off single, but could not push a run across.
Robinson (2-7) took the loss, surrendering four runs on nine hits with two walks while Christine Campbell (5-3) garnered the win, allowing just hits with three strikeouts.
The Leopards and Mountain Hawks will resume the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
