Skurla Drives in Three Against Hartford
BALTIMORE, Md. – Hartford banged out 16 hits in an 11-3 win over Lafayette softball on Sunday morning in the final round of the Coppin State Eagle Classic.
Things started off well for the Leopards who put up a three-spot in the top of the first inning. With Samantha Sweigart, Brooke Wensel and Paige Grover all aboard, Miranda Skurla doubled to left centerfield to plate the runs. Hartford starter Bianca Ross ended the rally by retiring the next three batters.
Hartford (5-3) scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning when No. 9 hitter Elizabeth Newkirk homered to cut Lafayette’s lead to 3-2.
In the visitor fourth, Morgan Biddle legged out the second triple of her career with two outs in the inning, but was stranded 60 feet from home.
The Hawks scored three runs on four hits in the fourth inning to take the lead for good and then piled on six runs in the sixth inning to put away the game. Newkirk and Madison Hilmire each singled in a pair of runs during the rally.
Stacy Gordon (0-5) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits over five innings. Ross (3-2) collected the victory, giving up two earned runs on five hits.
Weather and field conditions permitting, Lafayette (1-12) is set to open its home slate of games on Saturday, hosting Drexel at noon in a doubleheader.
