Big Third Inning Hands Leopards 9-1 Loss in Baltimore
BALTIMORE, Md. -- St. Bonaventure used an eight-run third inning to capture a 9-1 win over Lafayette softball on Saturday in the opening round of the Coppin State Eagle Classic.
With the game a scoreless tie through two and a half innings, St. Bonaventure sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning. Grace Perechinsky connected for a bases-loaded triple to score the first three runs. The Bonnies added five more off Lafayette starter Stacy Gordon who was hampered by four defensive miscues in the inning as SBU led 8-0.
In the Lafayette fifth, Ellen McDonnell broke up SBU starter Josie Borysevicz's no-hitter with a one-out double to left field. The next batter, Rebecca Dvorak, plated Lafayette's lone run of the game on a sac fly that scored Stacy Gordon.
St. Bonaventure (1-6) put away the game with a run in the fifth for the 9-1 final.
Gordon (0-4) gave up nine runs (four earned) on eight hits over 4.1 innings while walking six. Borysevicz (1-2) surrendered on unearned run on one hit while striking out seven.
Lafayette (1-10) plays Morgan State at 3 p.m. on Saturday and is scheduled to play Hartford on Sunday at 9 a.m.
