Kissell, Martone Selected for All-League Third Team
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Krista Kissell and junior Gabrielle Martone of the Lafayette women’s soccer team were named to the All-Patriot League Third Team, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Kissell and Martone helped lead the Leopards to their second straight postseason berth this season, winning 1-0 on Saturday at Loyola to clinch a Patriot League Tournament bid. This marks the first time since 1993 that the women’s soccer program has participated in postseason play in back-to-back seasons.
Kissell was a welcome return at the start of Patriot League play this season for the Maroon and White, missing all of the non-conference season recovering from an injury suffered during her senior season at Notre Dame High School. Her impact was immediate for the Leopards, scoring three goals in her first five games and finishing the year as the team’s top goal-scorer with four. Her presence also opened the door for junior Alex Stanford, who has scored two of her three goals on the year in the last two games alongside Kissell up front.
Playing behind that frontline, Martone put together another stellar year in the midfield for Lafayette, manning the center of the pitch alongside classmate Katie Brannigan. Selected as one of three co-captains as a junior, Martone contributed three assists to the offensive unit with two coming in the 3-1 win over Delaware State.
Lafayette’s all-league performers hope to extend their 2017 season with a quarterfinal triumph in a trip to Boston, Mass. on Tuesday. First touch at third-seeded Boston U. is set for 7 p.m.
