Smedley and Galgano on Preseason All-League Team

Aug. 14, 2012

EASTON, Pa. – Senior Lauren Smedley and junior Catherine Galgano represented Lafayette on the inaugural Preseason All-Patriot League Team, released by the League on Tuesday morning.

Smedley has been honored the past two seasons as the Patriot League’s Goalkeeper of the Year and was Lafayette’s first-ever Division I All-Mid-Atlantic First Team selection in 2011. Last season, Smedley backstopped Lafayette to its best record since 2001 with a 9-5-2 mark and led the League in saves with 86. Her .887 save percentage ranked 17th nationally and was 41st in the country in goals-against average (0.66).

Galgano, who, along with Smedley, was recently named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Conference First Team, was rewarded with a 2011 All-Patriot League Second Team selection at the conclusion of last year. The Basking Ridge, N.J. native played in all 17 games last season, including 15 appearances in the starting eleven, and was vital piece defensively in Lafayette’s eight shutouts.

The Patriot League also announced its annual preseason women’s soccer poll, which placed the Leopards fourth in the eight-team league. Last season’s regular season champion, Colgate topped the poll with 91 total points and collected nine first-place votes. Army, who upset Colgate and went on to win the League Championship in 2011, earned three first-place votes and narrowly edged Navy for the poll’s second position.

The Patriot League Preseason All-League Team and Poll are voted on by the League’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Lafayette opens its 2012 campaign on Friday at 7 p.m. when it travels to UMBC.
