EASTON, Pa. -
Catherine Galgano has been named captain for the 2013 Lafayette women's soccer team, head coach Mick Statham announced Tuesday as the team recently completed its spring season.

"It's not a secret to anyone what a high regard I hold Catherine in," Statham said of the rising senior defender. "She is very special and a marvelous representation of Lafayette women's soccer and Lafayette College. Choosing team captains is a very important task as they represent their teammates to the coaches, as well as delivering the coaches' messages to the team. Catherine is respected by everyone connected with the team due to her considerable talent, personality and behavior."

Galgano, who has been a staple on Lafayette's back line, has played in 47 games and made 34 starts during her three seasons on College Hill. With the Basking Ridge, N.J. native in the lineup, the Leopards have posted 19 clean sheets, while conceding a total of 55 goals, an average of 1.17 per game.

Galgano battled injury in 2012 and was limited to 12 matches on the year, but returned to form in the spring and is completely healthy. She and the team competed in a pair of scrimmages against Drexel and Kutztown, which each resulted in 1-1 draws.

"I have been very satisfied in the way that the players have progressed this spring," Statham added. "There are several players in particular who have really done well. I think we do a good job of developing players here at Lafayette and it's always very encouraging when you see players getting better on and off the field. Ultimately, it's up to each player to take responsibility for their development and this group has."

The team will return to Easton, Pa. on Aug. 8 for the start of preseason camp and is scheduled to compete in two scrimmages before the start of the regular season on Aug. 25 when it hosts Manhattan.

GoLeopards.com will have a full release of the 2013 women's soccer schedule in July.
