HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's soccer team surrendered an early goal and saw a valiant second half effort fall short in a 1-0 loss to Colgate in Patriot League action on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Lauren Smedley had eight saves in the contest.
The Raiders got on the board early in the opening half, when Sarah Henderson beat the Lafayette defense down the sideline and crossed a low drive into the box to an oncoming Danielle Wessler. Wessler's one-touch volley snuck inside the near post to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage.
Lafayette found its stride in the second half, immediately applying pressure out of intermission to the Raider backline. The Leopards' best scoring opportunity came off a set piece with eight minutes to play.
A long ball in found the head of the sophomore midfielder Janelle Pierson who connected for a shot on goal, but sailed into the arms of the Colgate goalkeeper for the save.
Lafayette will take the next few days to recover from a busy weekend on the road and two games in less than 48 hours before preparing for Army next Saturday. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. in West Point, N.Y.
