EASTON, Pa. - San Jose State traveled cross-country on a day that wasn't very welcoming to the East Coast, as rainy and cold temperatures watched the Spartans defeat the Lafayette women's soccer team on Friday afternoon at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
San Jose State used the wind in the first half to its advantage, jumping out to a 2-0 halftime advantage.
After the Spartans made it 3-0 in the 68th minute, the Leopards responded and showed some resilience when freshman Nicole Brownell found sophomore Julie Bell in the box. Bell roped a shot into the back of the net and Lafayette was again in striking distance, down just two with 20 minutes still remaining in the game.
However, San Jose State had an answer three minutes later when it was awarded a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Hallsie Pacheco capitalized on the chance and pushed the Spartan lead back to three at 4-1, the eventual final score.
The shots were fairly even, as San Jose State held a slim margin at 17-15. The Leopards outshot the Spartans 10-5 in the final 45 minutes of the contest and produced four corner kicks in that second frame.
Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Shiel made five saves in her first collegiate game while the Leopards forced San Jose State goalkeeper Nina Butera to make seven stops on the afternoon.
Junior tri-captain Mackenzie Moore paced Lafayette with four shots in the game.
The Leopards will look to even out the weekend on Sunday evening when they host Drexel. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and will follow day two of the Lafayette Puma Classic, hosted by the men's soccer team.
