Brian Herr completed his 11th year at Lafayette and brings over a decade of coaching experience, at the club, high school and collegiate levels, to the 2017 Leopards, coming off the team's first-ever Patriot League Tournament victory a year ago.
Herr has been part of Mick Statham's staff since 2006 and has been a key part of the Lafayette women's soccer program. After securing six wins in the 2010 campaign, which at the time was the most since 2002, Lafayette posted a 9-6-2 record in 2011 and earned the second seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
In addition to its highest-ever Patriot League finish, Lafayette added three more accomplishments that were program firsts. A perfect 6-0-0 home record and a 4-2-1 Patriot League mark highlighted the campaign, as well as four players earning All-Patriot League selections. Under Herr's tuteledge, Lauren Smedley '13 was named the Patriot League's Goalkeeper of the Year for the second consecutive season in 2011. Smedley also claimed a position on the Academic All-Patriot League Team and was a Senior CLASS Award candidate in 2012.
A 1998 graduate of Drexel, Herr came to College Hill after spending three seasons as an assistant women's soccer coach at Villanova. With the Wildcats, he was responsible for training and developing the goalkeepers. In 2003, Herr helped mentor Villanova to a Big East Championship and a run to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. During his time with the Wildcats, he spent three years developing Jillian Loydon, who was a two-time Big East Goalkeeper of the Year and a First-Team NSCAA All-American.
Prior to his stint at Villanova, Herr was a head coach and goalkeeping director for the FC DELCO Soccer Club. He spent time coaching both the Tar Heels and Fire women's teams, while also organizing training sessions for goalkeepers between the ages of 13 to 19. It was then that Herr and Statham established a working relationship, as both worked in the FC DELCO circle.
Herr was a four-year starter in goal at Drexel, setting the benchmark for career and regular season saves as a senior. He currently ranks 12th all-time in NCAA Division I with 483 career saves. As a sophomore, he earned First Team North Atlantic Conference honors, while his senior season drew Second Team All-American East and Philadelphia Soccer 7 Goalkeeper of the Year accolades.
Professionally, Herr taught for eight years as a secondary math teacher in the West Chester Area School District. He also spent six years (1996-2001) as the assistant camp director and staff coach for the National Olympic Soccer Camps. Herr also has coaching experience on the high school level, as he spent five seasons as an assistant at Radnor (2001-2002) and Conestoga (1998-2000) high schools.
Herr resides on College Hill.
