Booth Scores Season-High Four Goals in Leopards' 13-8 Loss to Iona
April 2, 2008 EASTON, Pa. - Senior attacker Maddy Booth netted a season-high four goals and added two assists as Lafayette battled against the Gaels of Iona College. The two teams were even in virtually every category, but the Leopards ultimately succumbed to Iona in a 13-8 loss. Junior midfielder Emily Archibald put Lafayette on the board early in the game (28:20) off a pass from Booth. Iona's Kelly Hughes evened the score five minutes later and the teams remained tied, 1-1, for the next 13 minutes. The Gaels took the lead at 9:47 off a score by Christie Godlewski, only to have sophomore Maria Drehwing tie it up again 28 seconds later. Iona regained the lead at 7:28 but goals by junior midfielder Kristin Ruminski and Booth gave Lafayette a 4-3 lead with 2:35 left in the half. Gael Jillian Beck scored with 00:58 remaining and the two teams ended the half tied 4-4. Iona went on a 5-0 scoring run over the first 13 minutes of the second half to give them a 9-4 lead. Sophomore Sydney Peyser scored off a free-position shot at 16:02 and Ruminski dished a pass to Booth at 10:31 to narrow the Gael's lead to 9-6. Senior Jacyln O'Leary scored three straight goals and Godlewski added her second of the afternoon to give them a 13-6 lead with three minutes remaining. Booth added two more goals just 20 seconds apart, but it wasn't enough to catch Iona and the Gaels took the 13-8 victory. Each team tallied 26 shots in the game and Iona (4-6) narrowly edged Lafayette in groundballs (28-26) and draw controls (12-10). Archibald and sophomore midfielder Tara Mayo led the Leopards in groundballs with four apiece and three different players led the team in draw controls (2).
Sophomore Emily Bjork played the entire 60 minutes in goal where she made five saves. Collen Magri made eight saves for the Gaels in goal. Lafayette (0-12) travels to Worcester, Mass. to play Holy Cross on Saturday at noon. |
