BETHLEHEM, Pa. -
Lafayette dropped a 13-10 decision to Lehigh in Patriot League women's lacrosse action on Saturday night at Ulrich Sports Complex. Addie Godfrey scored three times to lead Lafayette on the offensive end.
Lafayette (6-5, 0-2) played from behind for a majority of the game and erased two-goal deficits on two different occasions. The Leopards struggled on the draw, as Lehigh (5-5, 2-1) controlled 16 of the 25 opportunities.
Trailing 2-0, Ana White controlled possession behind the Lehigh cage before making a move around the crease toward the front of the net. Her right-handed overhand shot beat Lehigh goalie MaryLeah DiNisco underneath the crossbar and cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 23:28 mark.
Two and a half minutes later, Jessica Rothstein took the ball from left side and made her way to the middle of the field before firing a shot into the back of the cage to tie the score at 2-2.
A pair of Lehigh goals put the Mountain Hawks ahead 4-2, but Lafayette scored three straight to take a 5-4 lead. Laura Kleiber put in the first, Victoria Maxon added the second on a one-touch shot off a feed from Rothstein and then Rothstein netted her second tally to put the Leopards ahead with 16:44 left in the opening half.
Thirty seconds later, Lehigh tied the game on Lauren Murray's second goal of the period. The home team then went up by a goal on Julie McBrien's successful free-position attempt.
At 10:42, Addie Godfrey leveled the score with her first goal of the night before Lehigh took its largest lead of the half by reeling off three goals over a seven-minute stretch. After a Lafayette timeout, Godfrey scored again, this time beating Allison Fayans, who played the remainder of the half in goal for Lehigh, with 2:22 to play.
After a foul by Lehigh in the offensive end with 11 seconds remaining, White launched a pass from deep in the Lafayette zone to Godfrey, who caught it on the run just across midfield. The junior attacker outran her defender and ripped a shot into the back of the net with 2.7 seconds showing to pull the Maroon and White within one at the break.
Leigh Ann Torcivia opened the second half scoring with her third of the contest to put Lehigh up 10-8 nearly five minutes in. White responded by beating DiNisco less than a minute later after taking a pass from Godfrey in front of the Mountain Hawks goal.
Lehigh extended its advantage to 12-9 with two scores, the second being Torcivia's eight-meter goal with 15:24 to go.
After Meghan Curtin's save on Murray at 9:16 kept the deficit at three, Erin Steel drew Lafayette within two (12-10) at the 7:51 point. Lehigh added a late goal with 12 seconds remaining to run the final total to 13-10.
Curtin finished with seven saves and Lehigh's duo combined to turn away four Lafayette shots. The Leopards were not awarded a free-position shot the entire game while Lehigh finished 2-for-5 in its eight-meter attempts.
Lafayette returns to action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when it hosts San Diego State at Rappolt Field.
