DAVIDSON, N.C. -
Lafayette held a two-goal lead at halftime and never looked back, defeating Davidson 14-8 on Wednesday night at Richardson Stadium. The Leopards received goals from nine different players, including Jessica Rothstein, who scored a game-high three times.
Fifty-one seconds into the first half, junior attacker Addie Godfrey was awarded a free-position shot and capitalized, beating Davidson goalkeeper Jessica Melby for the game's first goal. Less than 90 seconds after Godfrey's tally, Ann Fucigna put the Wildcats on the board and leveled the game at a goal apiece.
Davidson then broke the tie less than four minutes in, when Erin Keitel put a shot past Lafayette goalie Meghan Curtin. Godfrey scored again 22 seconds later to even the score at 2-2 (25:45).
A little more than two minutes later, senior Lauren Curley forced a Davidson turnover to set up Victoria Maxon's seventh goal of the season on the other end to put Lafayette in front (3-2). At 22:47, Davidson answered the bell as Erin Doherty found the back of the net to knot the game at 3-3.
Lafayette regained the lead when Katie Mischler scored her fourth free-position goal of 2012, and sixth overall, at the 21:41 mark. Davidson continued to come up with an answer, scoring again to tie it up at 19:58.
Ana White controlled the ensuing draw and sprinted into the offensive end, setting up Rothstein's goal ten seconds after Davidson made it 4-4. More than eight scoreless minutes later, Erin Steel netted her seventh of the year to push the Leopards' lead to 6-4.
Doherty then made it a one-goal contest with her second score of the evening with 6:32 remaining in the opening half. Margaux LeBuffe regained the two-goal cushion with a successful eight-meter shot at 5:17. Curtin's fifth save of the half with just under three minutes to play kept Lafayette ahead 7-5 going into the locker room.
The Maroon and White dominated play in the second frame, outscoring Davidson 7-3. Rothstein's eight-meter goal 1:32 into the half extended the Lafayette advantage to 8-5 before Davidson pulled within two (8-6) less than a minute later.
Lafayette reeled off the next five goals, capped by Laura Kleiber's 14th of the season, to take a 13-6 lead with 11:33 to go. Kleiber scored twice during the stretch, Coutney Landolfe and Rothstein each had one, as well as White, who converted a feed from Godfrey to open the run. Rothstein's goal was assisted by Cammie Linville.
Two late Davidson goals and Mischler's second of the game ran the final total to 14-8 in favor of Lafayette.
Curtin, who earned her second win in as many games, turned aside eight Davidson shots in goal. Melby made two saves for the Wildcats before giving way to Katy Boyle in the second half. Lafayette controlled 13 of the 24 draws, while Davidson collected a dozen ground balls, compared to 10 for Lafayette.
Lafayette returns home to open Patriot League play on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it hosts Navy at Fisher Stadium. The game will be available online via goleopards.com/allaccess
