Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Lafayette women’s lacrosse team fell 10-8 to Marist on Monday night in the squad’s season opener. The Leopards fought their way back on multiple occasions to tie and took the lead early in the second half, but the Red Foxes were able to push past Lafayette in the final ten minutes.

Laura Kleiber led the way offensively for the Leopards scoring four goals and adding an assist, while freshman Kirsten Wilhelmsen tallied a pair of goals and an assist in her first collegiate game. Rookies Amanda Case and Alexis Thompson also scored for the Leopards. In between the pipes, senior Meghan Curtin made three saves.

Marist jumped out to an early 3-0 lead fifteen minutes into the opening half, but the Leopards fought their way back into the game with three straight goals. Wilhelmsen got the scoring started for the Leopards on a feed from Kleiber at the 14:36 mark of the first half. Two minutes later, Wilhelmsen returned the favor as she assisted Kleiber’s first tally of the season.

With less than 11 minutes to play in the opening period, Thompson knotted the game at three. After a Marist goal, Kleiber found the back of the net with 15 ticks left in the first half to send the teams into the break tied at four apiece.

Kleiber opened the scoring in the second half to give the Leopards their first lead of the night, 5-4, with 28 minutes to play. Marist stormed back with three goals in a row to take a 7-5 advantage at the 25:35 mark. Less than two minutes later, Kleiber was at it again tallying her fourth goal of the night, followed a minute later by Case’s first collegiate goal on a dish from Ana White to tie the game at seven.

The game remained tied until Marist found the back of the net with 11:35 to go, giving the Red Foxes an 8-7 edge. Lafayette was able to level the score on Wilhelmsen’s second tally of the night with under nine minutes to play, but less than a minute later Marist’s Kirsten Viscount netted the game winner. Marist added an insurance goal at the four minute mark and took down the Leopards 10-8.

Lafayette remains on the road Wednesday when the Leopards visit Delaware at 5 p.m.
