After a little over 17 hours of flight time, we finally made it to South Africa! After landing the team had a chance to relax, explore and stretch out for a few hours before heading to dinner at the waterfront.

A practice at a local high school wrapped up the day. Tomorrow, we start the day off with an adventure at Muizenberg with surfing lessons before taking on Stellenbosch University tomorrow night in our first game!

   Thursday, May 31

We started the day off with a splash as we trekked to Muizenberg Beach for a private surfing lesson where everyone had a blast despite falling off too many times to count.

@leopardsfh are basically pro surfers now. #PardsAbroad

After some free time at the waterfront the team headed back to the hotel for an hour of downtime before meeting to go over the game plan for the contest against Stellenbosch. Everyone hopped back on the bus as we hit the road to take on Stellenbosch University in our first game of the trip. We claimed the victory in the contest that was three fifteen minute periods, as Liza Welch and Caroline Turnbull did the damage on offense to give us the 2-1 victory.

   Friday, June 1

Today started off with a high powered training session with two local club coaches that saw the team pick up some pointers and views on hockey from outside the U.S.

Following the training session, we headed to the Wolweriver Setlement to do volunteer work with the SAVE Foundation. The settlement was home to a little over 6,000 people that were relocated by the government. The SAVE Foundation works to end the cycle of poverty that occurs in the areas. The team helped out at the Sunshine Educare school by spending time with the children, painting, building a pathway and clearing the grounds to help the foundation prepare a vegetable garden.

After leaving the settlement we headed back to the hotel for an hour of down time before heading to Camps Bay for an evening meal.

Tomorrow we hit the road for a tour up and down Cape Peninsula that includes a boat trip to famous Seal Island and a stop at Boulder Beach where the team will get the chance to meet a colony of African penguins. The day will wrap up with a traditional African dinner.

   Saturday, June 2

We spent the day trekking up and down the coast surrounding Cape Town, taking in all of the gorgeous sights the area has to offer.

The day started off with a boat trip to check out the local seal population in Hout Bay.

The boat trip around the bay got our "seal" of approval. #PardsAbroad

After the boat ride, we piled back into the bus and headed to Boulder Beach where we were able to make some new friends in the form of African penguins. From Boulder Beach, we headed to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and Cape Point. The team had time to soak in all the natural beauty of the area, including hiking up to the lighthouse at the very top of Cape Point.

The day came to a close with a traditional African dinner that featured dishes from all over the continent, face painting, and traditional African song and dance.

Tomorrow, the team will take a tour of historic Robben Island before heading back to thet mainland to ride the gondola up to the top of Table Mountain. Following the morning adventure, the Leopards will play their second match of the tour against the University of Cape Town.

   Sunday, June 3

After a little free time in the morning, the team hopped on the ferry for the 45 minute ride out to historic Robben Island. We spent the afternoon exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Sight, going on a guided tour with a former political prisoner of the island.

The team then headed back to the mainland to transfer to its second game of the tour against the University of Cape Town. The Leopards found themselves in a defensive battle against the hosts as the contest eventually worked to a 0-0 draw. The Maroon and White controlled the flow of the game from the midfield but couldn't find the tiebreaking goal as they frustrated the hosts on the defensive end.

Tomorrow, we'll take to the skies for a Cape Canopy ziplining tour through the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Following the thrilling ride throught the trees, we'll head back into Cape Town for our third and final game against the Western Province Girls 18U team.

   Monday, June 4

The day got off to a "flying" start as the group hopped on the bus and trekked out to the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve to go ziplining. After going through the safety presentation the adventure was on as we hiked, ziplined and took in the gorgeous sights of the Reserve all afternoon.

There's no crying in ziplining. #PardsAbroad

Following the zipline, the team stopped back at the hotel for a little down time before heading to the third and final match of the tour against the Western Province Girls U18 team. The game wasa  back and forth affair that saw the Leopards capitalize on their penalty corner chances. Liza Welch opened the scoring for the contest in the second quarter before the Western Province Girls knotted the game as the opening half came to a close. The Leopards took the lead in the third quarter, as Theresa Delahanty caged two goals on two penalty corners to give the Maroon and White a 3-1 advantage. Western Province got one back in the final quarter but the Leopards stood tall defensively to earn the 3-2 victory.

Tomorrow the squad will link back up with the SAVE Foundation for a tour of Langa Township. Following the tour, we'll head to Aquila Game Reserve for an evening game drive in search of the Big 5 before settling into the reserve for the night!

   Tuesday, June 6

The team got the penultimate day in South Africa started with a tour of Langa Township in conjunction with the SAVE Foundation. While on the tour, we got to see and experience how people in South African Townships live on a day-to-day basis while taking in the different initiatives and projects available to help break the cycle of poverty in the area.

Following the tour, the squad hopped on the bus for the two-and-a-half hour ride to Aquila Game Reserve. After grabbing lunch at the dining hall, we climbed into an open air truck for a late afternoon game drive. While on the safari, the team got to see a pair of elephants, giraffes, baboons and zebra just to name a few.
