EASTON, Pa. - Freshman defenseman Meghan Cicchi was honored by the Patriot League as the field hockey Rookie of the Year at the championship banquet held Thursday evening in Washington, D.C. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native is just the third Lafayette rookie in program history to receive the award.

"Meghan excels on the field not only because of her natural ability, but because she puts in a lot of extra time into watching video and extra training sessions," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "She also excels in the classroom. She has a very challenging course load for her first semester and has been able to handle it all really well."

The Chemistry major was the only first-year student athlete to be named to either the first or second All-League. She received First-Team All-League honors on Wednesday. Cicchi was the recipient of two weekly conference laurels this season, Rookie of the Week (9/10) and Defensive Player of the Week (10/22).

A key component to the Lafayette defense that has a 1.89 goals-against average, second in the conference, Cicchi has also scored two goals this season. Her first mark was a game winner against Quinnipiac (9/9) and her second goal came in the Leopards' 3-2 victory over Lehigh (10/6).

As the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament, Lafayette (7-9, 2-3) faces Lehigh, the No. 2 seed, on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
