Blass, Deutsch Earn Weekly League Honors
Oct. 15, 2012
EASTON, Pa. – Two members of the Lafayette defensive unit earned Patriot League weekly awards, the League announced Monday. Sophomores Brittany Blass and Jessica Deutsch took home Defensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week laurels, respectively.
“Jess and Brittany did a great job leading in the backfield,” head coach Andrew Griffiths said. “Our entire defensive group was rock solid in both games against two teams with dangerous attacking units.”
Directing another outstanding weekend for the Leopard defense, Blass earns her fifth Defensive Player of the Week award this season, tying the single-season record set by American’s Denise Infante in 2007. Blass and her teammates shut out quality opponents on consecutive days, blanking Bucknell 2-0 on Saturday and defeating Rutgers by the same tally on Sunday.
Deutsch earns her fourth Goalkeeper of the Week award this season after not allowing a goal on the weekend, and making three saves in each victory. She is 12-1 on the season, while her 1.06 goals-against average leads the Patriot League and is fifth-best nationally.
The Leopards turned aside eight penalty corners and allowed only three shots on goal against Bucknell. Similarly, they faced only five total shots from Rutgers to ensure their 10th-straight win.
Lafayette makes the trip to Worcester, Mass on Saturday to take on Holy Cross at noon.
