Aug. 22, 2012
EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette field hockey team took on Syracuse in their final scrimmage before the regular season Tuesday at Rappolt Field.
In a format that featured three 20-minute periods and a 10-minute overtime period, the Leopards played the Orange tough to a 1-1 draw in regulation, but gave up three goals in the overtime session, pushing the final to 4-1.
After a scoreless opening period, Syracuse lit up the board first with a shot by Alyssa Manley off a corner feed by Leonie Geyer and Kelsey Millman.
The third period began with Syracuse playing with an extra attacker, as the Orange were without a goalie for the entire period. A diving save off a corner attempt led to a Lafayette goal by Kelsey Gula off a Deanna DiCroce cross, tying the score at 1-1.
Later, Lafayette goalie Jessica Deutsch sprawled out for a diving save off a shot by Syracuse's Lauren Brooks to preserve the 1-1 tie with less than five minutes left.
In the overtime period, Brooks recorded a goal and an assist for the Orange, while two more goals were recorded by Syracuse's Emma Russell and Leonie Geyer to solidify the final tally at 4-1.
Lafayette begins its 2012 regular season campaign on Sunday as host Ball State at 1 p.m.
